Beyond Wonderful Weekend for #SteamTeamer Beth Underhill

By Kim Miller  | Equestrian Writer

“WOW!” is the only way to describe Canadian show jumper Beth Underhill’s weekend at the La Baule CSIO5* International Jumping in La Baule, France.

On Friday, May 6, she and Dieu Merci van T&L jumped double clear to lead Team Canada to a 3rd place finish in the €250,000 Nations Cup competition. They jumped double-clear again on Sunday to win the €500,000 1.6m Rolex Grand Prix Ville de La Baule.

The back-to-back wins were all the more remarkable given the emotional context of both moments. Dieu Merci van T&L is one of the superstars on which Beth took over the ride from Eric Lamaze. The Canadian Olympian recently announced his retirement from the sport – due to health issues – but he remains crucial to the sport as the newly appointed chef d’equipe.

As Beth told WorldofShowJumping.com: “As I was going into the ring for the jump-off (on Sunday), Eric said to me ‘It’s yours to take.’

That galvanized me. Eric just stood up so much recently and I know it’s been bittersweet for him to be here, because he loves La Baule so much – and he has helped all of us as Canadians so much, and myself. So, it has meant a lot: I went in there and I wanted to do my best.”

Dieu Merci is co-owned by Mark and Tara Dow-Rein and Eric’s Torrey Pines Stables. Haygain was fortunate to visit Beth at Torrey Pines’ beautiful base in Wellington, FL. earlier this year. We visited to talk with Beth about her long-time belief in Haygain Steamed Hay. You can check it out here.
